Introduction

A huge amount of credit for this writing goes to William Mistele. Without his research, many pieces would be missing.

Note: I often refer to Merfolk in general as Mermaids. This is not meant to limit the Mermaid experience to women only or people with “feminine” energy. (I also do not think energy can be intrinsically gendered.) All genders AND genderless identities have a place in the Merfolk realm. Though few people know this, I identify as non-binary, though (visibly) my phenotype will clue people in to the fact that I am an AFAB person with feminine gender presentation. Sometimes I feel like a woman, and other times I do not feel like I have a gender. My Mermaid lexicon is not meant to exclude any form of gender expression or identity. We are all welcome Here.

A quick introduction to the astral realm:

I want to make a distinction between astral Mermaids and incarnated Mermaids. Astral Mermaids are those who exist fully on the astral plane. When you think astral, just think “spirit world.” It is where you find most elemental vibrations, ghosts, and where many people go when they dream at night. The astral realm is what spiritualists refer to as “the fourth dimension.” It is a place where thought becomes reality very quickly, unlike on earth where there is some lag time for us to be able to correct misaligned thinking and manifest the reality we want!

Astral Mermaids are Merfolk who are currently only in the astral world… they do not walk the earth in human form. They do not have to concern themselves with human challenges or relationships, though they do choose to engage with earth-dwellers when it is conducive for the person or planet in some way.

Incarnated Merfolk are Mermaids who have spent most of their time in the astral realm, but have chosen to incarnate in human bodies for a specific purpose. Some of them come to teach empathy, others come to be healers for a time, and some Merfolk are here to focus on restoring our earthly water element. The thing about incarnated Merfolk is that most of who they are remains on the astral plane in spirit, but they choose to direct their consciousness into a human body temporarily. Humans and starseeds do this as well! The only difference is that Mermaids will always reside in the Mermaid realm on the astral plane, whereas, humans and starseeds drift among other worlds and realms. Being in a human body while still being hyper-aware of their astral forms can cause incarnated Merfolk to become ungrounded pretty easily. They have to maneuver their energy in ways that astral Mermaids simply do not have to. A few Mermaids incarnate as humans and then never come back, but they are able to offer advice from their brief earthly lives to those who incarnate more than once.

Below, I do my best to translate both astral and incarnated Mermaid experiences. Fundamentally, they are the same Beings with water in their energy fields. The only difference is that astral and incarnated Merfolk are navigating different Dimensions and having to adjust their approaches based on the realm that currently holds the majority of their “physical” attention.

Traits of the Merfolk

1.  Mermaids are Water. They are receptive, nurturing, and pure.

2.  Mermaids are Love. They are here to love and are fully Present in the Moment.

3.  Mermaids are Fearless. They are not anxious about the past or future… they are purely Here and Now. If you ask an astral mermaid if she feels stressed, you will be met with a blank look. Mermaids do not comprehend such ideas. Stress arises from resistance and the mermaid has none. Incarnated Mermaids are really good at overcoming trauma, anxiety, and stress as well, since they are so connected to the flowing water element. It does not invalidate them if they struggle though. Being in a human body means having a human brain, and there are repercussions in our bodies when bad things happen to us. Astral mermaids don’t have to worry about those things like we do.

4.  Mermaids are not an endangered species. They are timeless and infinite. However, due to the way humanity has abused the environment, our oceans and water-inhabitants are in need of a complete change in human behavior. The Mermaids are always happy to help with this.

5.  The Astral Mermaid presence: Their true form is Nature and the astral mermaid does not cling to identity. They are like the Sea. There is no attachment to present form… There is simply shifting and being all that it is. Of course, in human bodies this can change. Incarnated Merfolk truly feel Nature at the core of their Beings, but they adopt identities and personalities just like everyone else while they are on earth.

6.  Merfolk can be sensual, yes, but from a place of pure receptivity rather than common ideas of “sexiness.” Mermaids are not the sirens from mythology who lure unfortunate sailors to their deaths. It is not uncommon for humans to find them beautiful though! They are incredibly magnetic spirits and people.

7. All Mermaids are in the flow, whether they are astral or walk in human form. Put an incarnated mermaid into the water, and there is no semblance of human personality. There is only the water in the Moment and their playful reflection of the tides. There is this sense when meditating on the mermaid realm that everything is okay and all things are fulfilled.

8.  Astral Mermaids always feel complete. They have no human needs and do not understand what neglect feels like. Incarnated Mermaids can experience neglect and abuse, of course. That is part of being in a human body. On an energetic level though, they will never truly “need” anyone. They already feel whole! This can be quite frustrating for human partners who enter into a relationship with an incarnated mermaid. Roles and traditional concepts of needing to feel useful in a relationship usually fly out the window. The Merperson will never need you, and if offered the opportunity to go back to their realm, most of them will do so without a second thought. Mermaids always feel at one with those that they love. This means that they do not know what it is to “leave something behind.” There is only Now. There is often a learning curve for incarnated Merfolk who enter romantic relationships. Most of them figure it out with time and learn how to speak the human love language of “validation” and “I need you’s.”

9.  Astral Mermaids do not bond. They are one with whomever they think upon, but in the absence of the “thought” or “person” there is no attachment whatsoever. Mermaids will be the last people to genuinely say, “I miss you.” It is more a social nicety. They do not know what it is to have something good be absent from them. They already feel whole. Some incarnated Merfolk have learned what it is like to “lose” a friend. Usually, they rely on their psychic abilities to reconnect with pets, friends, and family who have crossed to the other side.

There IS a mourning process for incarnated mermaids who lose physical friends, but it is usually more gentle for them since they almost always re-establish a connection with the Loved one over time. This is an ability that is available to everyone if they learn to fine-tune their higher senses!

10. Ask any of the Mermaids how they view humans… Well, once they get past expressing their love for everyone… and you might hear them say something like, “Humans feel half dead.” The Mermaid represents a spirit that is completely alive with zero attachments. Humans are still shifting to a state of being where they embody being complete… meaning that the Mermaid can feel the difference between the pure water and the one who stands in front of them with insecurities. It is an energetic observation on their part- not a judgment. Of course, many humans are waking up and reconnecting with their true selves! Merfolk love to see humans who embrace who they are and live their passions as fully as they possibly can.

11. Mermaids have no sense of time. Timelessness is their way… you might say they are like some starseeds in this manner. Incarnated Merfolk have to learn how to be aware of the human concept of time to be relatable and respectful of others while in human bodies.

12. Yes, incarnated Mermaids often spend ridiculous amounts of time in in water! Many humans feel recharged by water as well. The spiritual experience with water seems to make the difference between mermaids and humans- but everyone can experience the infinite nurturing capacity of the magnetic fluid. Everything that a Mermaid is can be accessed by humans whenever they choose. Everyone can become a Merperson when they integrate the principles of water into their inner selves.

13. All Mermaids, incarnated or astral, also have psychic empathy. Empathy is one of the most obvious traits of the Mermaids. It is not like human empathy- it never gets drained and does not need to recharge. It is a part of who the mermaid is and is not seen as a “blessing and a curse” like human forms of empathy often are. It is natural and easy for them.

My friend William Mistele has spent years studying Mermaids- astral and incarnated ones- and he can ask an incarnated Merperson to focus on almost any individual in the world. The Merperson can tell him what the chosen person is feeling, thinking, and intending in that moment. Again, this is a trait available for anyone to access! It just takes some practice and inner work.

Although incarnated merpeople have unlimited amounts of psychic energy, they do exist in human bodies. Those bodies can get tired, drained, and overstimulated just like everyone else’s. This too can take some getting used to, even for the Mermaids who have incarnated on earth more than once.

14. The uninhibited Presence of an astral Mermaid can be hard for people to comprehend. They do not have insecurities and their love has no favoritism (although the spiritual/empathetic state of a person can determine how deep the relationship goes). Incarnated Merfolk can have preferences and dislikes just as anyone in a human body can, but those things do not define them at their core. It is very easy for them to tap into the water element and “let go” of things that do not serve them… a valuable lesson for anyone on earth!

15. All Mermaids use water in their healing work, even if they employ earthly forms of healing such as reiki, traditional nursing, or physical therapy. A Merperson simply cannot separate the watery essence from their energy work… It is a part of who they are whether they exist on the astral realm or on earth.

16. Mermaids never stop loving anyone. Even if a romantic relationship or friendship ends, they cannot fathom ending the “love.” It continues infinitely, flowing freely and without limitations.

17. Initially, many incarnated Mermaids have no sense of purpose in life other than “to love” and look after the water element. Many of them have to take care to think about practical ways to use their love and passions in productive ways on planet earth. All of the Mermaids work on healing earth’s water systems in some way or another, but most of them don’t think of it as a “career” since it is inseparable from who they are. Mermaids do not feel better about themselves due to their accomplishments, earthly possessions, or popularity. As stated before, they already feel whole and do not need external validation. Any action a mermaid takes in our world is heart-based and comes from a place of Pure Love.

The good news for incarnated Mermaids is that many earthly careers pair very well with watery energy and empathy, if the Merperson can learn to ground themselves. I know Merfolk in a variety of careers such as being: Nurses, artists, designers, paleontologists, psychologists and therapists, spiritual teachers, professional swimmers and surfers, oceanographers and marine biologists, professional mermaids, writers, and more.

18. There are many people in this world who love the ocean. There are activists for coral reefs, dolphins, and the watery essence itself. They are amazing and are in no way inferior to Mermaids, but as you can see being a mermaid is an experience that can be distinguished from just loving the ocean and being a voice for it (though those are parts of it!). Being a Merperson is to exist as the embodiment of the water element itself. To a Merperson, water and love are inseparable, ubiquitous energy fields that are always free-flowing to those who choose to access them.

There are some minor differences between astral and incarnated Merfolk. That is because Merfolk on earth are incarnated into human bodies. This is accompanied by an entirely new sphere of experiences, which the incarnated Merperson has to learn how to navigate. Life on earth is an adjustment for everyone, no matter who they are! Earth really is a waystation for so many forms of expression, energy, and embodiment and, to a Merperson, all paths are valid. A Mermaid will never want to be anything other than a Mermaid, but they see all Living things as incredible expressions of Source. They consider it an Honor to be a part of All That Is, and to share in the experience with others.
